Space Saving Ideas for Tables

The idea of the small, well-designed home has become more and more appealing as the days of the American farmhouse with ten children and massive dining room tables are no longer the norm. However, the importance of family meals is no less important.

Studies show that families who eat together daily, without the distraction of television, phones, or other entertainment are more likely to be in healthy, happy relationships, and continue in them for generations to come. Sadly, many homes have eliminated the dining room table altogether to save space. Here are some ways to consider returning this icon of American culture to the compact home.

Post Bases

If floor space is the issue, then post bases might be the answer. A single post base at the center of a round or square table allows more people around a smaller table, and the whole dining area won't take up as much room if different, eclectic chairs are brought to the table for larger dinners. Single metal table bases are easier to clean under than a standard 4-post table, and it becomes easier and safer to reach underneath in case toddlers decide to crawl there.

Round Tables

Not having corners on tables can save walkway room, as parents and kids don't need to navigate around sharp edges. They are also able to fit more chairs around them if space for everyone is an issue.

Kitchen Bars

Bar tops are great ways to save space and keep the food in the kitchen, eliminating the need for a larger table to hold serving platters and meals. If the kitchen isn't set up for one, a long, high table by a window or the edge of the kitchen can be a handy substitute.

No matter the size of home, or the layout, there are plenty of good ways to arrange a dining area and encourage the interaction involved in family dinners. The above ideas are just the beginning when it comes to organizing a home to make room for a dining area, and if they won't work, there's probably some other arrangement that will. Bars, carefully-chosen shapes, and metal table bases can create spectacular, unique pieces that fit the space and décor requirements of any home.
